Roof Replacement Scaffolding at County Hall Apartments, South Bank

Overview

County Hall Apartments sits on the South Bank in Lambeth, South London, in the shadow of the London Eye and directly across the river from the Houses of Parliament. It’s a substantial, historic building, and any works to it demand a scaffolding solution that can handle both the scale of the structure and its high-profile riverside setting.

Secure Access Scaffolding was brought in to design and erect scaffolding in support of a full roof replacement at the property.

The Challenge

A project of this size presented several challenges our team needed to plan around:

  • Height and scale. County Hall Apartments rises many storeys, meaning the scaffold needed to run the full height of the building without any restriction, giving the roofing contractors safe, stable access all the way to the top.
  • A high-footfall, high-visibility location. With the building overlooking a busy stretch of the South Bank, close to pedestrian routes, public spaces and passing traffic, the scaffold needed to be erected with public safety and site security front of mind throughout.
  • Weather and debris protection. With the roof open to the elements during replacement, a temporary roof and full sheeting/netting system was required to keep the site protected and contained at height.

Our Solution

Our team designed and erected a comprehensive scaffolding package to wrap the full elevation of the building, engineered to give the roofing contractors safe, unrestricted access at height. The scheme included:

  • Full-height tube and fitting scaffold, wrapping the building’s elevation from ground level to roof, with securely boarded working platforms and toe boards at each lift.
  • A birdcage-style access structure at roof level, built up above the main scaffold to provide a safe, enclosed working platform directly over the roof itself, complete with boarded decking and internal bracing for stability.
  • A temporary roof structure, netted and sheeted in blue debris netting, to protect the works below from the weather and to contain debris throughout the roof replacement.
  • Full debris netting across the entire scaffold, keeping the site secure and minimising any risk to the pedestrians and vehicles passing below.
  • Ladder access and internal bracing throughout, giving the site team safe, straightforward movement between lifts.

As with all our projects, the scaffold was erected by our fully qualified team, with safety and stability built into the design from the outset.

The Result

The finished scaffold gave the roofing contractors safe, unrestricted access to every part of the roof, while keeping the surrounding South Bank area protected from debris and disruption throughout the works. The temporary roof and netting system kept the site weathertight and secure for the duration of the roof replacement.
